1. What Is a Surge Protection Device(SPD)?
Lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, and line faults are common in power systems, and they can generate instantaneous high-voltage surges that may damage equipment or even cause fires.
Reliable Surge Protection For Safer Power Systems
SPD — Stops danger at the entry, protecting your electrical safety.
Power surges are sudden spikes in voltage that can damage sensitive electronics, disrupt operations, and even cause safety hazards. A Surge Protection Device (SPD) works by instantly detecting abnormal voltage and diverting the excess energy safely into the ground, preventing it from reaching connected equipment. Simple to install yet highly effective, SPDs are essential guardians for both homes and businesses, ensuring reliable power and long-term protection.
2. Key Features of Surge Protection Device
Surge Protection Device (SPD) safeguards electrical systems by preventing sudden voltage spikes from damaging equipment. They ensure safer, more reliable power for homes, offices, and industries. Below are six key features that make Soltree SPD an essential part of modern electrical protection.
- Surge Protection:
Responds within nanoseconds to instantly block harmful voltage surges.
- Flame-retardant Housing:
Built with fire-resistant materials to enhance safety and reliability.
- DIN Rail Mounting:
Quick and convenient installation with globally compatible DIN rail standards
- Modular Design:
Flexible structure allows convenient replacement and maintenance.
- Multiple Protection:
Provides comprehensive defense against lightning, overvoltage, and transient surges.
- Strong Endurance
Durable construction ensures long-lasting performance under harsh conditions.
3. Always Know Your Protection Status
Traditional surge protection device lack a status window, making it impossible to know when the device is damaged and needs replacement. The new SPD comes with a built-in indicator window, offering a clear and intuitive way to check its working condition.
Clear Status, Instant Reminder
The visual indicator makes system monitoring simple and efficient. A green display means the device is functioning properly, while a red signal clearly alerts you when the module should be replaced. This easy-to-read design helps you act quickly, preventing hidden risks and keeping your power system secure.
By giving you a clear view of the device’s health at all times, the indicator window adds peace of mind and ensures your protection is never left to guesswork.
4. Flame-Retardant Material for Safer Protection
During lightning strikes, the high voltage and current may break through the surge protector and generate sparks. Without flame-retardant materials, the consequences could be disastrous.
Enhanced Safety with Fire-Resistant Design
The flame-retardant enclosure not only strengthens the durability of the device but also provides an added layer of protection in extreme conditions. By effectively reducing the chance of fire spread, it helps secure your power network and safeguards both residential and industrial applications.
Beyond fire resistance, the use of high-quality materials ensures long-term stability and reliability even under repeated surge events. This added assurance means your system remains protected day after day, giving you confidence in both performance and safety.
5. Ultra-Fast Response for Lightning Protection
When facing lightning strikes or other sudden surges, the response speed of a surge protector is critical—only a fast enough reaction can truly safeguard your electrical safety.
Nanosecond-Level Protection You Can Trust
When lightning strikes, every fraction of a second matters. Soltree SPDs are engineered with advanced components that deliver an ultra-short response time—measured in nanoseconds. This lightning-fast action blocks harmful surges before they can reach your equipment, reducing downtime and preventing costly damage.
Beyond speed, Soltree’s precise surge control ensures consistent performance even under extreme conditions. Whether in residential homes, commercial buildings, or industrial facilities, this ultra-fast protection keeps your power systems secure and your critical devices running without interruption.

7. What Makes One Surge Protection Devices Safer Than Another?
The Internal Structure Matters—What’s Different Inside Our Three Surge Protection Devices?
- Poorest quality
Some low-quality surge protectors cut costs by skipping proper epoxy encapsulation, leaving the MOV chip vulnerable to moisture and premature failure. Worse still, without a reliable tripping mechanism, they cannot disconnect in time during lightning strikes—exposing your equipment directly to dangerous high voltage.
- STL Series SPD
STL is Soltree’s standard surge protector. It uses an epoxy-based compound for encapsulation, providing solid protection for the MOV chip. Equipped with a reliable tripping mechanism, it ensures the circuit is promptly disconnected during lightning strikes, safeguarding your equipment from damage.
- STM Series SPD
STM is the upgraded surge protector from Soltree. Like the standard model, it uses an epoxy-based compound for encapsulation to protect the MOV chip. On top of this, it features optimized copper connections, which enhance tripping speed and improve the chip’s precision for more reliable surge protection.
- STH/STD Series SPD
STH and STD series are Soltree’s high-quality surge protectors. They feature independently encapsulated MOV chips with superior heat dissipation, along with extensive use of premium copper components—including screws, springs, and connectors. These upgrades further enhance both the service life and response speed of the device, delivering top-level surge protection.
8. Know more about SPD
Learn more about Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)
1.Surge protective device (SPD) working principle
In the simplest terms, when a transient voltage happens on the protected circuit, a surge protective device stops the current flow by closing its switch contacts, controls the transient voltage, and sends the current back to its source or ground. That stops voltage transients from hurting connected devices. At least one of the parts of the surge safety device must be non-linear. That changes between a high and low impedance state depending on the situation.
The surge protecting device is in a high-impedance condition at normal working voltages, so it doesn’t damage the system. When there is a transient voltage on the circuit, the surge protective device goes into a condition of conduction (or low impedance) and sends the surge current back to its source or ground, much like the normal discharge current. This keeps the voltage at a safer level by limiting or clamping it. After the transient diverts, the surge protecting device immediately goes back to its high-impedance state.
2.Main types of SPD
Type 1 SPD
Installed at the main distribution board or building service entrance.
Designed to discharge high-energy surge currents from direct lightning strikes.
Tested with a 10/350 μs impulse current waveform.
Type 2 SPD
Installed in sub-distribution panels inside the building.
Protects electrical systems and equipment from switching surges and indirect lightning effects.
Tested with an 8/20 μs discharge current waveform.
Type 3 SPD
Installed close to sensitive terminal equipment, such as sockets, plug-in strips, or individual devices.
Provides fine protection against residual surges that pass through Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs.
Tested with a combination waveform (1.2/50 μs voltage and 8/20 μs current).
Type 1+2 SPD
A combined protective device that integrates the functions of Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs.
Capable of withstanding direct lightning currents while also limiting switching surges.
Often used in compact installations to provide comprehensive protection with a single device.
3.Specifications of SPD
Uc: the maximum RMS voltage that an SPD can withstand continuously without degradation, representing the highest voltage the device can operate under normal conditions.
Up: the residual voltage that appears across the SPD when it conducts surge current, representing the actual protection level offered to the connected equipment.
In: the current level of a standardized lightning surge waveform that the SPD can withstand repeatedly, representing its long-term endurance.
Imax: the highest surge current the SPD can withstand once, representing its ultimate capacity.
8/20 μs: the standard surge current waveform used to test the nominal and maximum discharge current of an SPD. It simulates typical switching surges or indirect lightning effects, representing the SPD’s ability to handle frequent surge events.
10/350 μs:the standardized lightning impulse current waveform mainly used for Type 1 SPDs. It simulates direct lightning strikes or high-energy surge conditions, representing the SPD’s capacity to withstand extreme, high-energy impulses.
